Mobile Digital Television Is the Future

The radio and TV industries are planning for the future, and National Association of Broadcasters president/CEO David Rehr recently outlined what that means for viewers.

“This mobile DTV revolution has already begun,” Rehr reported. “Mobile digital television will launch across 66 stations and 27 markets–covering 38 percent of U.S. television households–and more will follow.

“Television broadcasters are moving TV beyond the bedroom, living room or kitchen. That means watching ‘Lost’ on your handheld media player or ’Heroes’ on your cell phone. That means anywhere you are, you can access the news or your favorite shows. That’s our future.”

In moving in this direction, NAB provided the seed money to support the Open Mobile Video Coalition—more than 800 television stations working to bring digital television to mobile and handheld devices.

Rehr also suggested that computer manufacturers produce upwards of 40 million digital TV screens each year, adding: “We, of course, currently know them as laptop computers. … Our Fastroad program is working with manufacturers and their sub-system suppliers on how to incorporate DTV reception in laptop computers–both the chip and the antenna–so receiving digital television will be easier than connecting to Wi-Fi.”

In the area of radio, Rehr reported: “We’ve been reaching out to U.S. mobile phone carriers to include FM chips in cell phones. This brings radio to upwards of 250 million devices in consumers’ hands.”

He reported that Verizon Wireless, AT&T and T-Mobile are offering FM radio-capable handset devices. “And we’re working to get Apple on board as well,” he said.

Rehr noted that integrated FM receivers would give cell phone users access to the Emergency Alert System. “These announcements are relied upon as a lifeline for Americans during emergencies, and we’re getting a great response,” he added.

Series Creator Josh Schwartz Discusses Life in Rockville, CA

Rockville, CA creator Josh Schwartz is not sure there will be another season of his popular original web series.

Speaking at the recent National Association of Broadcasters Convention in Las Vegas., writer/producer Schwartz – who is also the creator of series Chuck, Gossip Girl and The O.C. – reported that a greenlight would depend on his schedule as well as the cast’s availability.

During the conference session, he discussed production of his web series and shared his thoughts on the rapid changes in content distribution and consumption.

On making Rockville, CA – which combines four-minute episodes with performances by indie bands – he says that web series production budgets are generally low, but the creative team can also maintain a lot of control. He explains: “People are getting paid something but it’s well below what they would be for a television show. That said, the tradeoff is you are given an incredible amount of creative freedom (such as in script and casting). So creatively you are very invested because you have no one else to blame (if it is not well received).”

On viewing trends, Schwartz related: “The industry has recognized that we are now much more in the business of narrow casting, than broadcasting. You don’t necessary have to have 20 million viewers anymore to be a relevant show – that can not only be successful, but brand a network. Gossip Girl’s greatest value to the CW, probably, has been helping to brand the network.”

When asked his view on how entertainment is changing, Schwartz responded: “I don’t see it as a positive or negative. This is the way we communicate now. I try to evolve with it, observe it and find the art in it.”

In addition to TV and web work, Schwartz is writing the next installment in Twentieth Century Fox’s X-Men franchise, X-Men: First Class.

During his discussion, Schwartz shared a laugh with the audience as he described how he uses Facebook. “You can go on Facebook and your friend, can tag a photo album from a birthday party for someone you have not met. You can look through that person’s entire photo album.

“I do that,” he admitted, getting a big laugh from the crowd. “I just assume everyone else is living a more exciting life than I am. I just watch and think: ‘that’s a party I wasn’t invited to.’ “

Ultradome: Darth Vader vs. Gandalf

Have you ever asked yourself if Harry Potter could beat Neo in a fight?

If questions such as this have crossed your mind, then you’ll be interested to hear about “Ultradome” – a new comedic web series of shorts that address comic book/video game/fantasy/sci-fi pop culture.

“Heroes” actor Milo Ventimiglia will produce the series through his DiVide Pictures and partner Agility Studios.

Plans call for each episode to begin with two characters engaged in a pop culture debate. The characters then find themselves in the Ultradome – a packed stadium where the two engage in single combat, using weaponry, gear and skills from the pop culture touchstones referenced in the argument.

The series will therefore begin with weapons such as light sabres and swords. Ventimiglia produced and stars in the pilot episode, “Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings,” and will direct select future episodes. He co-created the show’s format with partner Russ Cundiff and Agility executives Keith Quinn and Zev Suissa.

“My whole life has been spent engaged with friends in intellectual debate … like whether Kirk is tougher than Spock or if Middle Earth is a more difficult place to live than Tatooine. With Ultradome, we can bring these debates to the public and settle them in the most logical way possible: through armed combat,” Ventimiglia says. “We’re very excited to be working with Agility on this series and to tap into their expertise in digital programming.”

The producers expect to include cameos from sci-fi enthusiast actors, writers and directors in the series.

“Star Wars vs. Lord of the Rings,” is currently in postproduction. The pilot was written by Mike Alber and Gabriel Snyder, and directed by Nathan Matsuda.

The timing for this project appears to be ideal, as Comic-Con International – the annual event for comic book and related pop culture – is slated for July 23-26 in San Diego.

3D: Coming Soon to a Computer Screen Near You?

A brilliant cockroach, giant woman and blob of goo are among the out-of-this-world creatures that will soon jump off movie screens, as Dreamworks Animation opens its first digital 3D movie “Monsters versus Aliens” on March 27.

Digital Technology – if used properly–has enabled 3D movies to be made and shown with more precision than in the past. Many in Hollywood believe that by removing elements that have created discomfort and eye fatigue, this new medium will bring audiences back to theaters in record numbers.

Stakeholders also believe 3D will come to the audiences’ home – and hand.

On the way are a range of consumer electronics that support 3D, including computer monitors and TVs, video game displays, smart phones and other handheld devices. Some promising technologies can be viewed without special glasses.
Others gadgets coming to market include a 3D webcam, as well as a head-mounted 3D display that when hooked up to a portable content player such as an iPod allows 3D viewing on the go.

The technology can work – the author of this article has seen and tried many of these devices – but more needs to be done.  There are a lot of moving parts in the effort to bring 3D to the home. Business models and technical standards are for instance still being developed, and naturally content is key for consumers. In Hollywood, the release of “Monsters versus Aliens” is a benchmark in the digital 3D movement, as DreamWorks Animation made a commitment that with this movie, all of its titles going forward will be made in 3D.

Disney has made the same commitment for its animated slate, which includes Pixar Animation Studios’ titles such as this year’s “Up” and a rerelease in 3D of its classic “Toy Story.”
And arguably the most anticipated movie of the year is James Carmeron’s 3D title “Avatar” – his first major motion picture since “Titanic” – which opens on Dec. 9.

Hi, my name is Paul Mario and I was watching Satellite TV On my PC when I came across the movie trailer for the latest Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (to be released in 2010). I believe the prince of persia game is brilliant and I am eager to see a film based on the game. Jerry Bruckheimer is the director, he did the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. According to an interview with Jerry Bruckheimer, the movie stars Jake Gyllenhaal who has been in many good movies including   Rendition (2007), Zodiac (2007) and Brokeback Mountain (2005). Sir Ben Kinglsey also appears in the film.

The Prince of Persia is primarily about a street rogue called Dastan who gets taken in by the King because of his valour and courage. The King wants the young man to be part of his family; despite the fact he already has two sons. The King refuses to have his two sons struggling with each other over his succession.

Dastan has a love interest with a gorgeous princess. So, this film has a notable romance, huge adventure and distinguished action.

Jake brings his attractive looks to his character. He really worked out for the part and, hence, is in fantastic shape. He’s also a great actor, youthful with massive amounts of talent.

It was filmed in Morocco during the hot summer; therefore the heat reached 100 degrees. The actors had to wear heavy clothing, but they survived.

Jake explains “the movie is so enormous and so many people have put their time and energy into making a film like this. It’s outstanding.”

Jerry emphasizes that the film is a massive epic set in a huge world with massive fantasy. It far exceeds what you may have seen in a movie before. Jake is quoted saying Jerry Bruckheimer is trying to outdo Jerry Bruckheimer.

Unfortunately, you have to wait for this movie.
