The third film in the Subculture saga goes back centuries to give an explanation for the origins of the feud between the vampire Death Dealers and the werewolf Lycans.

Taking over directing requirements from Len Wiseman in Rise of the Lycans blu-ray, is rookie Patrick Tatoupolos, known for his creature-designing duties in Godzilla (1998), I am Legend (2007), and the first two films in this series.

Less an action-horror film than an old-fashioned “sword-and-sandal” film with monsters, Rise of the Lycans blu-ray eventually gets to the root of why those vampires and werewolves really can’t stand each other.

Ruled by Viktor (Bill Nighy, Valkyrie), the aristocratic, vampiric Death Dealers keep the wolflike Lycans as slaves. When a captive Lycan lady births a human boy, Viktor resists the need to kill it, instead naming him Lucian and keeping him as a pet.

Lucian (Michael Sheen, Frost/Nixon ) grows up to be a blacksmith with the ability to change between human and wolf and starts a secret romance with Viktor’s daughter, Sonja ( Rhona Mitra, Doomsday ). Viktor learns of this banned love and takes drastic steps to ensure that Sonja will never be able to see Lucian again.

Lucian, in retaliation, leads a Rise of the Lycans blu-ray slave revolt, resulting in an all-out attack on Viktor’s kingdom. Though spectators who have skipped the 1st 2 payments of the saga may feel a little left out when it comes to the mythology of the series, Rise of the Lycans blue ray dvd hits the ground running and does not allow much time for queries.

While Sheen has been praised for his work in more historically dramatic films, here he gives his all to each growl and battle cry. Mitra is an appealing presence as Sonja, and Nighy is visibly relishing the chance to glower in his blue contacts and gnaw the moonlight-bathed view.

I like blu-ray movies a lot. They offer really high quality picture quality. HD is the way of the future. Following my introduction to blu-ray watching DVDs is akin to poking needles in my eyes. I saw Spiderman 2 on blu-ray the other and it couldn’t even compare to when I watch it on regular DVD a couple of years back. Not only the picture is improved, but so is the sound generated. I really can not say enough good things about these regular discs.

I bought a high def TV, and when I view normal TV programming or even DVD movies it seems like a waste of my time. I do not even think it’s a good way to spend my time really. I’d rather read a book then watch crapy TV (and that’s saying a lot). There are HD channels available, so that makes it better, but still I wish everything looked like blu-ray DVDs.

Many people don’t buy blu-ray discs because they think they are prohibitively expensive. Yeah sure you pay a little more, but the quality is so worth it. It is not even that expensive really. You can buy blu ray movies online if you look for them. They really aren’t that expensive. One thing they are though is worth every penny. I would buy blu-ray movies even if they were $100 each. As opposed to really looking at price, I’d rather consider the quality.

When I look at how far technology has come it really makes me wonder what is yet to come in our lifetime in the realm of television. I suppose thinking about that stuff to much is useless. I’ll just talk about the here and now. That’s why I don’t know why more people don’t buy blu-ray players. I can concede they can cost a pretty penny, but the are worth it for sure. I don’t think I could cope without mine, not to sound insane.
