You may think that if you get an American Idol audition, you get to perform in front of the judges you see on TV: Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson. But this is not true at all. American Idol is already at season 9, that means 9 years already of American Idol. With every upcoming season, there will be more casting calls to find the next American Idol. When you watch an episode of American Idol about the auditions, they glamourize the whole thing and it doesn’t really work that way.

The reality is that you are in line with other candidates for hours and hours until you see the casting directors. You don’t even get a chance to audition in front of a camera or in front of celebrity judges. You first have to get past this first stage before you can even audition in front of the judges you see on TV. The casting directors will then advance you to the next round if you have the right look and can sing really well. The casting directors will also purposely pick people that suck so that the public can laugh at them on national television. The casting directors will definitely not choose you based on singing alone If you can sing really well, but aren’t predominantly Caucasian, have an interesting backstory, and you must be attractive. Or else the casting directors won’t choose you.

I have worked in casting for years and the only thing we look for is if that person is marketable to the general public. Here’s a perfect example. Remember William Hung with that song “She Bangs?” Although the casting directors knew he was horrible, they also knew that they could use him for ratings. It didn’t matter that he was the laughing stock of the whole nation for a week. All that mattered to the casting directors was getting viewers and getting Nielson ratings.

Less than half of a percent of all candidates on the show get to see the celebrity judges and be on TV. I’m not trying to turn you away from auditioning, but instead make you desire it more.

Star in your own song and find auditions for music videos.

The best piece of advice I can give you is to never give up. Good luck!
