Horror Defines the Misfits
A lot of rock bands don’t stay as they are when they began. In a lot of cases, established groups change members quickly. This is especially true for the Misfits, featuring different individuals on their Misfits discography.
Band Past
Misfits was formed in 1977 in New Jersey with Glenn Danzig as singer and songwriter, Jimmy Battle on guitar, Diane DiPiazza on bass guitar and Manny Martinez on drums. During its first six years as a band, the band had so many changes in its line-up that it began to take on the look of musical chairs, with Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only as the permanent fixtures. As of last count, there were a total of 17 official members of the Misfits with as many as 8 drummers.
In 1983, the band decided to call it quits but eventually came together again in 1995. This only happened however after a prolonged battle on the legal arena for rights to use the band’s name. It’s obvious why this had to happen considering how established the Misfits name is in the music scene. Anyone given the right to carry the band name automatically inherits the band’s history and appeal to music fans across the globe.
At present, the members of the group are Jerry Only (a.k.a. Gerald Caifa) on lead vocals and bass guitar, Des Cadena on backing vocals and guitar as well as Robo (a.k.a. Roberto Valverde) on drums. Music fans may hope that there will be no musical chairs coming up but it is still a possibility given the band’s rocky history, pun intended.
Albums Out
Many bands are considered posers and copycats. The Misfits however is accurately tagged as the pioneers of the death or horror punk genre. It should be obvious to anyone what this genre is all about. Although it has elements of punk rock, what is most noticeable about is its dark and scary imagery.
In its more than three decades in the music industry, the band has released 6 studio Misfits albums, 2 live albums, four extended plays (EPs), one box set, five music videos, one DVD, 12 singles and, sadly enough, one cancelled Misfits album. In many ways, the band is one of the most productive and most influential rock bands in the industry.
To date, the group is credited with this list of releases:
• Walk Among Us- Static Age and 12 Hits From Hell were the first Misfits albums but this third one was the first release for the year 1982
• Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood- This was released at the end of 1983 and marked the last piece of work in which Glenn Danzig recorded with the group
• American Psycho- The title was taken from the novel by Bret Easton Ellis and was released in 1997
• Static Age- This was recorded in 1978 but it took nearly two decades for it to finally come out in its entirety
• Famous Monster- This 1999 album reminds fans of the kind of music for which Lady Gaga is now popular for
• Project 1950- The title says it all as it features songs from the 50s
Today, the new Misfits is starting to regain its popularity among music fans and music merch buyers, which should only serve to reaffirm its status as one of the leading bands in history.
