Sunglasses are basically intended to protect the eyes from strong light and ultraviolet frequencies and some feature lenses that are polarised or darkened.Many people do find direct sunlight too bright for comfort, particularly when driving, flying or operating machinery. So much for the stark scientific basis behind sunglasses.So why are some shades just so much cooler than the others?Since the 1940s, sunglasses have been popular as a fashion accessory especially with celebrities and movie stars as a means to hide or mask their identity.
Sunglasses have always symbolised much more than simply a means of protecting your eyes. Rayban sunglasses for example are timelessly stylish and never fail to look on trend or contemporary. This icon for the eyes goes back to 1936 and was designed to meet very exacting technical specifications.Looking good was never a part of the original brief, it just seemed to arrive by accident! The fledgling US army air force realised that they needed sunglasses with large curved glasses to protect the pilot’s eyes from every angle. In the 1940’s, Ray Ban was hired by the US Air Force to develop these sunglasses for pilots. In 1952, the iconic Wayfarer was launched and became the world’s best selling sunglasses from any brand.They were helped by the fact that they were essential props in breakfast at tiffany’s , Donny Brasco, Reservoir Dogs, the Blues Brothers and of course the vertically challenged scientologist’s Aviators in Top Gun.
Another brand that has gone even further as a fashion accessory is Police sunglasses.Over the past 25 years, many high profile celebrities such as George Clooney, David Beckham and Antonio Banderas have been the face of Police.They were handpicked and hired to be ambassadors for the brand, reflecting the attitude, elan, aspiration and style these rugged shades wanted to project. Since the launch of the first Police sunglasses collection in 1983, there has followed a watch collection, a range of fragrances, jewellery and clothing.
