A Look at The Latest Generation LED-Lit TVs

TV’s have come a long way since their first conception. With the old models you only got a picture if you sat square on to screen and squinted to make out people and objects. Since then we have had stereo sound, widescreen, plasma, LCD and whole host of other developments to quench our thirst for technology.

The latest innovation in the world of TV is LED backlighting. LEDs are cropping up all over the place recently, in everything from car headlights to light-up crystal vases. They are popular because they are very reliable, create very ‘true’ light and use a great deal less energy than other forms of lighting. It is true that TVs do work very well with fluorescent lighting, but as technology continues to advance and more is demanded of screen lighting, a better alternative is now needed.

An increase in demand for faster, slicker and more defined pictures, coupled with a desire for everything to be super slim, goes some way to explain why LED lighting found its way into TVs. People want their phones, stereos and even vases slim line these days, and TVs are no different. As the LED backlit TVs use a special diffusion panel to create an even spread of light across the screen, the lights can be around the edge of the TV and not behind the screen. This means that many models are only around an inch thick. They also provide greater dynamic contrast and offer a wider colour gamut.

Another benefit of the LED technology is that it is a lot more environmentally friendly. This form of lighting uses around four times less energy than fluorescently-lit TV screens. Further more, when it comes to disposing of them, there is a great deal less pollution. Additionally, the LED TVs are a lot safer and have less change of exploding due to power surges or contact with liquid. That said, it’s not advised that you start resting your wine glasses on top of them, just in case.
